How to select fall clothes
Fall is a great time to go through your closets to see what’s being worn and what is taking space. This post aims to give you some tips on how to select fall clothes.
Going through your closet as a first step. Try on all of your clothes and divide them into three categories — keep, donate and trash.
Own the essentials. Several key items will help bring everything in your wardrobe together: a classic, narrow blazer in tweed or velvet, light wool flat-front trousers (this season, look for ones with slim legs), and a couple pencil skirts in charcoal gray or navy. They can all be paired with lacy, feminine tops. And white tanks are great for layering under everything (my favorites are by J.Crew). Top it off with a black or khaki trench coat.
Once you have the basics, trendier items give them a fresh twist. Inventory the clothes that you’re keeping and try to think about new ways of putting them together. Use suits as separates, mixing and matching pants or skirts and blazers.
Once you’ve done that, it’s time to go shopping for those few accessories that will make those clothes look new and trendy.
For this fall, many designers suggest colorful belts and purses, which can add a splash of color and work with many different pieces. She says belts can work over dresses, skirts, sweaters, even coats.
Add some metal. Put away the pearls and the beaded necklaces. Instead, pile on a bunch of gold chains in varying lengths to make any outfit instantly cool. I also love a slouchy bag with a big buckle or other bold metallic hardware.
A new pair of shoes is also essential. Classic pumps are versatile for most occasions. Grey instead of black, or shoes with peep-toes. And, peep-toes can be worn even in winter, with opaque tights.
